A Convenience Fee is Charged By The Credit Card Processor for Using Your Credit Card.
In order to provide online services we have to use credit cards; however,
Government agencies are unallowed to absorb credit card costs like businesses do in the private sector.
Florida statute allows us to accept credit cards if we use a credit card processing vendor, who charges a
convenience fee to the individual user for the convenience of using their credit card, and not passing
the charges on to all customers like businesses do.
We have searched tirelessly to get the best rate on credit card transactions. Our current credit card processing
company uses a fixed scale for tags. We try and make sure people are aware of our vendor’s convenience fee
(that we get no part of), before they make the transaction.
Many tax collectors have stopped taking credit cards altogether. We had thought about stopping it, but many people
complained telling us they wanted the choice to use their credit card and didn’t mind paying the fee, so we offer
the choice of renewing online as well as by mail or by stopping in at a location.
We will continue to keep our eyes open and watch for credit card processors with the lowest rate to give individuals
who chose to use a credit card the best price and allow them to renew 24/7 from their home computer.
